On November 16, 2017, CHILD USA hosted its first annual awards celebration at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Former CBS3 anchor, Pat Ciarrocchi, emceed the event and award-winning journalist and abuse survivor, Steve Jimenez, delivered a stirring call to action. The event honored three giants in the child protection sphere, who have devoted their careers to protecting our children. Hon. Lynne Abraham, former Philadelphia District Attorney whose office produced the United States’ pioneering grand jury report on diocesan clergy sex abuse, was honored with the CHILD USA Trailblazer Award. The Sean P. McIlmail Hero Award was presented in memory of clergy sex abuse victim Sean McIlmail, who passed away from a drug overdose awaiting prosecution of Fr. Robert Brennan, to Reverend Tom Doyle for his extraordinary and tireless service to the victims of clergy sex abuse. Rita Swan, the founder of CHILD USA's predecessor, CHILD INC., and the leading expert and advocate in the United States on child harm from faith-healing was given the CHILD USA Child Protector Award. All three of our honorees have had truly remarkable careers and carved new trails to the protection of countless children from abuse and neglect. To Lynne, Tom, and Rita, thank you for everything you have done to protect our children.
